Why does cursive look like that?

Dear Reader:

You ever think about why cursive looks the way it does? Every style comes from a culture and is born out of the needs and traditions and stylistic preferences of the culture. And those things come from the environment of the culture – the history, geography, climate, technology, language, resources, and the people themselves. It’s mind-bendingly complex and that undefinable recipe is baked into every letterform. In the same way, the handwriting of an individual is born out of the individual. So when someone sends you a handwritten note, they are sending a little more than the words on the page.

Sincerely,
Dave
