Pens
Any writing instrument will do, however, I encourage you to complete the course with a pen, not a pencil.
Here are some good options for pens:
- Bic Round Stic Medium (Ballpoint, 1.0mm) – Inexpensive, convenient, and great performing ballpoint pen on any type of paper.
- Pilot G2 Fine Point (Gel roller, 0.7mm) – Smooth writing gel pen that puts down a dark black line on any type of paper.
- Asvine Extra Fine Fountain Pen – Great performing budget fountain pen with a professional look and feel. Get some Hongdian Ink Cartridges to go with it!
Note: Use a pen with a point on the finer side. A bold pen will put down a thicker line that will hide your mistakes and make it harder for you to analyze your practice.
Paper
Ballpoint and gel roller pens will work on any type paper, which makes them perfect for writing on the printed worksheets or in the official Workbook.
Here are other paper options if you want something a little nicer:
- Hammermill 32lb premium copy paper – Heavier weight than standard copy paper with a smoother feel. Suitable for laser or inkjet printers.
- Cambridge spiral bound notebook – College ruled sheets in a convenient spiral bound format. Great option if you can’t print the worksheets or want something easy to carry around.
Special Note: Fountain Pens
Fountain pen ink is much more fluid than the ink in ballpoint or gel pens, therefore it can bleed or feather on standard paper.
Here are a few tips if you are using a fountain pen:
- Don’t buy the Consistent Cursive Workbook. It is printed on inexpensive paper and won’t work well with fountain pen ink.
- If you are printing the worksheets at home, use Hammerhill 32lb premium copy paper.
- If you don’t have a printer, you can either bring some of the Hammerhill paper to a print shop OR you can buy quality lined paper, like this Rhodia Notebook.
- If you are going to write on regular copy paper, try Noodler’s X-Feather ink, which is formulated to prevent feathering.
Don’t forget to buy ink!
Most fountain pens, like the Asvine Extra Fine, don’t come with ink. The best bang for your buck is to buy a bottle of ink. A nice black or dark blue ink is the practical way to go, but use whatever color you like.
Here are good options for ink:
- Asvine Hongdian Ink Cartridges – Simple and easy, comes in a variety of colors.
- Asvine Hongdian (Bottle) – Learn to refill a fountain pen from an ink bottle and you can save a little money on ink.
- Pilot Iroshizuku (Bottle) – This is premium quality ink with brilliant color options.
- Noodler’s X-Feather (Bottle) – Formulated to prevent feathering.
There’s an endless amount of inks out there. Pick one and start writing!
