Dear Reader:

Like many others that study American penmanship, I revere the penman of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Whenever I go to look at the work they left behind, I tell myself it won’t be as good as I remember. Then I look and it’s better.

It’s a shame we don’t have film of them writing . Film came a decade too late and penmanship died out a decade too early. Perhaps it adds a little mystery and charm to our mostly forgotten art form.

Sincerely,
Dave

P. S. In case you haven’t seen any of the work from the penman of the 100+ years ago, I’m enclosing a sample of penmanship by Frederick Tamblyn.

Specimen of business penmanship by FW Tamblyn.
